Bar Open is known for itís progressive programming and support for innovative concepts (long time home to legendary improv club 'the make it up club' for instance). The perfect home for such an out there UL concept on March 11.

The majority of Uber Lingua's multi-lingual MCs actually live in Melbourne, and a few chickens have come home to roost, coincidentally for the pilot event. Weíve also done a bit of hunting and found some fresh blood to feature. Around 14 languages will be flexed during this particular event, and that's not counting tracks dropped by the DJs. Uber System will evolve over the months and new scenarios will be formed.

What is Uber System?

As you may know, Uber Lingua is a crew of international music loving DJs, multi-lingual vocalists, diverse musicians, visual artists and dancers based mainly in Sydney and Melbourne, but also other parts of Australia and the globe.

Over the past few years a loose 'sound system' has formed, more recently known as the abbreviated title UBER SYSTEM. This entity pulls upon Uber's massive human resource to create continuously changing cultural combinations in a live performance scenario.

Using DJ & MC Hip Hop methodologies, the improv techniques of Jazz, affected mixing styles of Dub and electronic music & video art production, Uber System participants exist almost as modular elements. Infinite combinations are formed for specific outcomes.

Itís taken on Batucada attributes for Brasilian events, has split up into multiple sub-acts to play across bigger festivals, has done gigs in different cities simultaneously with totally different line-upsÖ sometimes is more dance performance oriented, sometimes more AV...

It is not an act, it is simply a live performance mechanism within Uber Lingua.

Each person involved has their own stuff going on, be it bands, solo work, music production, DJ gigs, video art, broadcasting, dance acts, whatever... They're not only promoted through being featuring at UL events, Uber System also throws up collaborative challenges and allows for some fairly amazing outcomes.

Uber System has played multiple major national festivals, Adelaide Fringe opening night to 20,000 people, Darwin Festival opening night, Sydney Festival 'Festival First Night' thrice, alongside Falls Fest, Bellingen Global Carnival... the list goes on. All of these sets have been completely unique line-ups or different combinations.

More so in Sydney over the past couple of years, multiple 3-room parties titled Uber System have been filled with these DJ vs MC vs VJ scenarios.

The ambitions of the project are to promote new non-English vocal and internationally connected musical outcomes within Australia thru fusing the many cultural and linguistic ingredients we have at our disposal. Over 20 languages have been performed over the past three years.

bP (masked bass & beats)

With cultural diversity his primary passion, Australian DJ/producer 'bP' (Brendan Palmer) has been representing the musically 'not so represented' for nearing two decades. He has wandered the world gathering sounds and has performed in places as diverse as Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, London, Tijuana, Mexico city and Helsinki to name a few...  In 2004 he launched Uber Lingua and his sonic activity has grown exponentially playing literally hundreds of gigs and promoting culturally charged music in most capital cities of Australia. bP's sets traverse language, culture, genre, history and social scenes; deliberately defiant of mainstream music fashions, he presents an intersection of underground and outernational sounds that capture his imagination. Roots to Futurism, East to West, Minimal to Maximal are all sonic stops on bP's translingual express. Brendan additionally works as a producer at the legendary Melbourne radio station Triple R during the day and presents the weekly 'Dialectic' radio program on the web and across Australia on the Community Radio Newtork twice weekly.

Aldison Jnr straight from Rio drops portuguese chants and baile raps like no other.

El Tigre redefines what can be done with a Saxaphone...

Arnold Eye Irons

post-UK video artist, light & optics sculptor and lecturer at Swinburne University, Paul Rodgers AKA Arnold Eye Irons connects with decades of video art history and rips it back into the now. Analogue and digital.

VJ Siadatz (formerly SDzeit)

Melbourne based Dom Evans is VJ Siadatz and has been actively generating digital light for the past five years. His work combines his illitrative art, sampled imagery, self made animations and other elements, often flowing between dark abstraction, urban psychogeographics and scientific surrealism. His work with Uber Lingua is sensitive to the cultural intersections that are being exlored and the collisions of ancient worlds with the modern hi tech... the results are stunning.

Projector Obscura

Projector Obscura is a small collective of visual/new media artists all
currently based in Melbourne. We work with live video, audio and
interpretive dance.
