SYDNEY FUNK BALL

UBER LINGUA AT THE ABERCROMBIE,
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4: SYDNEY FUNK BALL

"A galera brasileira tomou conta da cidade"

Rio de Janeiro has some of the most dangerous slums in the world. With limited food, crime-ridden streets, guns and severe drug trafficking, children are given little hope for a normal life in the favelas.  Remarkably, this environment has also given rise to the world's most in-demand urban musical scene; the sound of funk carioca, or baile funk (Portuguese for "funk ball").

After the highly successful Melbourne Funk Balls in 2006 which raised thousands of dollars for these kids and their families, international music crew  Uber Lingua offers Sydney-siders the chance to come together on Sunday February 4 at a charity funk ball at The Abercrombie Hotel.

All funds from the event will go towards one inspirational woman, Sister Carmelia, who works in one of the worst slums in the Taquara district in Rio.  She travels to dangerous areas every day to see that children are fed, cleaned and receive medical attention.  By paying a small entry fee of $6, you can help support Sister Carmelia and her efforts.

Special guests Jimmy Sing & Sleater Brockman (Ro Sham Bo / Wamp Wamp / FBi) play alongside Brasilian DJs Marcelinho (one night in Brazil) and Melbourne's Guido Melo plus Uber residents Mashy P, Sheerien, Stu Buchanan & bP will play some of the funkiest favela beats around. Baile Funk, Sambass, Batucada and much much more... 100% Brasilian music.

Rounding out the night will be a special Capoeira performance by Filhos da Bahia and a Fashion show by Totem Praia. An authentic Brasilian Style BBQ will be available all day, also raising money for the kids. Door prizes donated by a variety of businesses will be given out throughout the event, such as rare Brasilian Baile Funk Vinyl, compilation CDs, DVDs, clothing, lingerie, nights out, Brasilian waxing and much more...

Guido Melo - From Brasil, now living in Australia... one very passionate man. His mother used to be a Capoeira champion music is part of his life since before he was born. Although he calls himself a Carioca (person natural from Rio de Janeiro) He was born in Salvador da Bahia in BrazilĒs northeast. His first flirt with the DJ scene happened in the late 80Ēs when he used to go to the Baile Funks around town in Rio. After making his move to Melbourne in 2003 He has played at several events in Melbourne. He is much exited to his first gig in Sydney!

DJ Marcelinho plays the hottest and the latest Brazilian grooves such as Pop/Rock, Reggae, Samba/Pagode, Electrosamba, Samba Rock, Baile Funk, Axé, Forró, Hip-Hop & RnB, Brazilian Tribal House and Drum'n'Bass.

Tantalizing your senses, DJ Marcelinho will entice you into a world of vibrant movement, colour and sound as he takes you on a journey of traditional and contemporary music and dance typical of the diverse regions of Brazil. Brazil's music and dance captures the very essence of its people. A conglomerate of many colours, Brazil is proud of its rich heritage. From the indigenous people of the jungles of the Amazon to the white European settlers of Portugal and Spain, to the black African Slaves and the latter wave of Italian, Japanese, Lebanese migration - Brazil is truly a melting pot.

bP

A national broadcaster for almost 7 years at SBS Radio, now a producer at Melbourne's legendary 3RRR, Brendan Palmer also DJs as bP. The brains behind the Uber Lingua concept, this Irish Aussie is an international music fanatic. He has a solid network of multi-lingual music sources and along with simply enjoying the types of music that feature languages he doesn't speak he reckons... "As different languages use different parts of the brain, and as languages not understood by a listener become a non-contextual sonic element of any given piece of music, allowing a deeper appreciation of human vocals." bP is inspired to discover as much 'post world' music he possibly can.

from RO SHAM BO

Sleater Brockman vs Jimmy Sing

SLEATER BROCKMAN is a young dude who has been DJing since he finished high school. He's only really been half decent for 6 months, but he has supported a whole bunch of good dudes including Diplo, A-Trak, Spank Rock, DJ Mehdi, The Liars, Buck 65, Ghislain Poirier, DJ Gorky and more. He is the only member of Ro Sham Bo without a beard, and this fact keeps him awake at night.

JIMMY SING is one of those jerks who is always like "I'm not really a DJ..." but then you see him play and he's thirty times better than you ever will be. What a jerk. Jimmy also runs a record store out of his lounge room which is responsible for providing the rest of Ro Sham Bo with the new hits. It is also often responsible for the rest of Ro Sham Bo

DJ Sheerien, who recently returned from an extended trip overseas, is an exponent of ancient booty beats, Sheerien is a fourth-generation Australian Punjabi whose transient home is between the banana fields of North Coast NSW, the Sydney studios of SBS Radio and the nation's most pumpin' parties. Her recent escapade overseas saw her venture thru China and her motherland India on the way to the UK, where she continued her on going relationship with the highly active UK Asian massive. Many of the leading exponents of the formerly known Asian Underground (it's now quite overground) are close friends, so she's sure to have a solid selection of brand new (and some un-released) tracks...

Stu Buchanan

Originally from Scotland (and with a highly flavoured accent to boot) Stuart Buchanan is a comrade of the international and multi-lingual music movement, Stuart has played killer dancefloor sets around Sydney since he hit the ground. Stuart delves into everything from Rock, electronics, crunk, minimalism and global sounds of many kinds beyond these examples...
