UBER LINGUA SYDNEY

UL has a great history promoting and performing in Sydney. The Sydney crew are a diverse bunch of culture lovers and the multiple one off events, festival appearances and UL weekly and monthly gigs we've presented have left a reputation for cutting edge global parties not to be forgotten... Highlights have included playing host to the Nortec Collective from Mexico and presenting 3 months of weekly gigs at Candy's Appartment in 2005, our HARBOUR LINGUA cruises round Sydney Harbour in 2006 featuring the likes of Curse ov Dialect and UL toured Kenyan Hip Hop duo Sinpare... presenting touring electronic culture jammer Filastine in late 06, then launching our relationship with the Abercrombie Hotel... Weekly Sunday gigs happened between Nov 06 and April 07, with events such as the massive Sydney Funk Ball fundraiser (for Brazilian street kids) being one of the many highlights...

In 2007 we did a DJ space at the St Jeromes Laneway Festival, and later that year (after our tour of Mexico) started our monthly residency at the Abercrombie that's grown into something pretty huge, across 3 rooms... every month... events such as the multiple UBER SYSTEM parties and the two SYDNEY GYPSY & BALKAN BASH events... Presenting a 4 stage multi-lingual AV performance space at Festival First Night in Angel Place & playing multiple times at Becks Bar (including a set at UBER BRAZIL with Monobloco) had UL featured in the Sydney Festival 2008 many a time... In Summer 07/08 we wandered up north a bit, playing Bellingen Global Carnival 2007, Exodus Festival in Tenterfield 2008 and a smaller thing in Newcastle.

In July 2008 Sydney's 2SER chose to broadcast the in-house Uber Lingua radio show DIALECTIC each week... Saturdays from 10.30pm to be exact.

In August 2008 we presented the Sydney leg of the National tour by Japanese artist Tujiko Noriko at the Sydney Opera House Studio...

Tujiko Noriko (born Noriko Tsujiko in Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese avant-pop, experimental musician, sometimes compared to múm, or Björk. Much of her music consists of repetitive layers of samples and electronic beats and melodies being gradually added on top of each other, with her singing on top of that. The lyrics are in Japanese and English. She has worked for the Austrian label Mego, and the German Tomlab. In 2004 she teamed up with Peter 'Pita' Rehberg to form DACM making the album Stéréotypie. She is currently living in Paris and is also working on experimental short movies. According to an article in The Japan Times, she has completed two movies: Sand and Mini Hawaii and Sun.

Uber Lingua had a fairly mad early January 2008. The Sydney Festival 'Festival First Night' 4 stage laneway space in Angel Place has been heralded by many punters as their 'favourite spot' of the night and the thousands of people who ventured through the video and multi-language drenched zone we're all smiles. Uber Lingua reckons it's doubled it's audience in Sydney from that single event!

Just before that major production, Uber hosted it's first event at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi with in house Latin crew SOCIAL PROGRESSION SYSTEM bringin the house down alongside UL VJs and DJs playing supercharged multi cultural music and imagery. In the second week of Jan, the Uber Lingua Sound System comprising of crew from both Sydney and Melbourne, performed at the UBER BRAZIL event at Becks Bar alongside MONOBLOCO, and then ventured up to Tenterfield, Northern NSW for the EXODUS FESTIVAL

Then we did this: UBER SYSTEM REMIXED!  @  ABERCROMBIE : Saturday Feb 9 at the Abercrombie Hotel

Featuring international guests :

Räuberhöhle (Berlin) - Childish electro with fem-German MC, a puppet show and a 'Bear'.
Nova (Twin Sista - Java)  - A well developed Javanese Hip Hop artist. One half of the TwinSista duo.
Pochoman (Cuba) - emerging reggaeton artist working with Mashy P.
Potato Master (Japan) - highly theatrical Brisbane based Japanese MC that rocked it at Angel place.
Alongside local acts Gypsy Dub Sound System (electo-accoustic Gypsy) & Black Symbol (Ghanese Hip Hop)... and DJs: Dub Chaman (Latin Reggae), bP (Melb), Mashy P, Lorna (yes, Lorna), BFG (Bhangra), Stu Buchanan (Guardian UK award winner), Sven Simulacrum (global booty)

On Feb 8th 2008 in Syd we played alongside Overproof Sound System from Birmingham... bP's followed these guys since the 20th century... The Uber Melb crew played with them also the night before...

The Overproof Sound system started its life in 1998 as a monthly reggae night called "Overproof" held at the Medicine bar in Birmingham,  England. The night was started by Different Drummer's Richard Wittingham (Rockers Hi Fi) Adam Regan (Leftfoot) and Birmingham's dub duo G.Corp. Since the seventies, reggae music in Birmingham had become ghettoised, pushed out of city venues into illegal parties and split into genres. With violence on the increase it was only the brave that would get to hear it. The "Overproof" night was not only a way for those involved to escape the recording studio and party but a way of bringing reggae back to the masses.

In 1999 a European promoter attended the club and so impressed with the good spirit and almost tribal quality of the party he invited Overproof
over to Europe, thus giving birth to the "Overproof sound system". The sound system has been touring constantly now since 1999 and has become a solid core of five people Ras-T-Weed (Rockers Hi Fi), Juggla, Mighty Magoo, Stallion (G.Corp.) and Jah Grizzly (G.Corp.).

This is gonna be a great show. If yer on the Melb list by accident and live in Sydney we're also playing with them on the Friday the 8th at The Oxford Arts Factory...

On January 11th 2008 the Uber Lingua Sound System (in Brasilian mode) played at UBER BRAZIL alongside Monobloco and our DJs Mashy P, Stu Buchanan and our good friend Marcelinho also at Becks Bar...

The MONOBLOCO SHOW features several percussion and rhythm instrumentalists selected from the Carioca music scene, playing samba as well as funk & pop music. The group recorded its first CD in 2002 and has been travelling through several cities in Brazil giving workshops and performances of their rhythmic feast. Their repertoire ranges from traditional sambas to classics of Brazilian Popular Music such as Tim Maia, Jorge Benjor, Chico Buarque, Nazao Zumbi, Luiz Gonzaga and many other major names. The MONOBLOCO SHOW
is a real party that has satisfied the widest range of audiences.

NO SLEEP 'TIL TIJUANA on June 8th was a Mexican fiesta, send-off and fund raiser for the Uber Lingua DJs who are traveling to the US-Mexico border taking up the invitation to play a series of shows in Tijuana - hometown of the Nortec Collective.

The Mexican crew opened the first Uber Lingua residency in Sydney during 2005, and returned to give one of the highlight shows at last year's Melbourne International Arts Festival, alongside playing once again with Uber Lingua at St Jeromes. Nortec Collective is not a thing or a genre or a group or a band, but an entire electronic aesthetic. It is a convergence of high-tech and low-tech, of North and South, of all things techno with all things norte?o, of all the things that are a part of the rural and urban. The sound of the Nortec Collective is the sound of the First World in the Third and the Third World in the First.

The proceeds of this event went to help Uber Lingua represent all they have done in Sydney, Melbourne and other Australian cities over the past three years with photographic, graphic, video and audio documentation, alongside their signature DJ sets... and to link up with underground music and socially progressive groups in Mexico.

Check out the flickr site for photos of this gig.
