Russ Jones (UK)
[above: Russ Jones (right) is one half of global music DJ duo Future World Funk, with his buddy Cliffy] Over the last five years Future World Funk has risen to be a unique voice on the global-dance scene - one time pioneers of the scene Russ Jones and Deejay Cliffy are now recognised Europe-wide as the leading purveyors of the genre, confirmed by incredible deejay performances at some of the most important European festivals including Glastonbury, Womad, Montreux Jazz Festival, SFinks Festival (Belgium), Festate Festival (Switzerland), Big Chill, Bradford Mela, National Theatre London. The Womad festival summed it up beautifully by writing: "there are maverick figures out there to whom this blinkered and monotone approach is just nonsense and we can thank our lucky stars that they exist. DJs Russ Jones and Cliffy are supreme examples of this breed. Their Future World Funk club nights have been delighting London's more open-minded club goers for more than four years now and have spawned a compilation series of the same name released by Ocho Records. Russ and Cliffy's approach is wide open, eclectic, global, innovative and anchored on the need to entertain a crowd. Mashed up Brazilian 2-step, Arabic hip hop, Afro-house, vintage reggae, Latin ragga, Japanese funk, all of these and more find pride of place of the Future World Funk" Womad Programme Apart from a presence at the major festivals, FWF have played in almost every serious world beat club on the planet from such diverse location as Beijing, Moscow, Sao Salvador, Toronto, Oslo, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, New York, Japan, Sao Paulo, Zurich, Istanbul and many more. They currently have residences in London and Madrid and regularly deejay across Europe. The full recognition of FWF contribution to the global dance scene came when they were selected from 350 acts to represent the UK at the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Seville in October 2003 which has led to invitations to deejay at festivals right across Europe in 2004. WOMEX is the world's largest and most significant annual music conference, trade fair, showcase and meeting point for all professionals involved in world and roots music. As one of only 3 deejay acts they will be performing a special showcase (inviting musicians, MCs and VJ to join them) to the leading players on the world music scene from all corners of the planet. This will mean an extremely busy tour schedule for 2004 - just the way the guys like it! What exactly is the Future World Funk sound? The music policy is simple yet unique, nowhere else in London can you find this global pastiche of rhythms and sounds. Combining elements of Latin, African, Indian, Arabic and Caribbean music with the nocturnal sounds of breaks, beats and grooves From Ghanaian Hip Life to Latin Drum & Bass, South African House to Moroccan Gnawa Dub, Nigerian funk to UK Bhangra, Brazilian Mangue Beat to Digi dub, no country or style dominates. Vulgar Grad
With a highly alcoholic blend of old Russian thieves' songs, a pinch of Perestroika-punk and a dash of contemporary St. Petersburg swearing ska, VulgarGrad brings you the music recommended by the Moscow mafia and Vladivostok taxi-drivers. If Thatcher's Britain had punk, Stalin's USSR had thieves' songs, or 'blatnye pesni'. VulgarGrad perform these vodka-fuelled songs of forced labour, betrayal, revenge, giraffes (and of course Mama) in a way you will not easily forget. Featuring the incredible vocals of Jacek Koman accompanied by Australia's most outstanding ex-cons, VulgarGrad is truly music for Russian roulette. These guys hold the attendance record at the Old Bar in Johnson Street and have a growing following in the North. With the current wave of Balkan-Gypsy-Ruski music a journey to the East was calling out, particularly with all the Russian speakers in that part of town. VulgarGrad are: Jacek Koman (vocals) Phil McLeod (piano accordion), Renato VaCirca (drums), Andrew Tanner (contrabass balalaika), Nara Demasson (electric guitar), Ros Jones (trombone), Adam Pierzchalski (trumpet) Diafrix
Diafrix music is a rare blend, new Australian urban music with an African bent, with raps that can flow from English to French to Swahili and back again. Drawing their influence from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Timbaland and Stevie Wonder with a healthy mix of tough hip-hop. MCs Azmarino and Momo draw lyrically upon their experiences growing up in Africa (Eritrea & The Comoros Islands) and immigrating to Australia (Footscray) as children. Beats are provided by producer Ptero_Stylus, who has worked with Jake Savona, Sista She, Elf Transporter, IllZilla and more, Cuts are provided by Wax Vandal (Equills). This is hardcore, soulful, dance-floor music with a positive message and more than a little ESL up in the place. Combine two parts Hip-Hop with one part Soul add a twist of Dancehall and you are well on the way. This is one live show you do not want to miss. Diafrix have been performing extensively in Melbourne for the past three years. Highlights include: Falls Festival 2005, St Kilda Festival 2005, Finalist in the 2005 Noise SOYA music awards, JJJ Next Crop Act 2005 and Supports include: Stereo MCs, Tippa Ire, Tzu, Bomba, The Herd and more. bP
As a DJ, bP focuses on cutting edge music in "...as many languages as possible..." His recent sonic wanderings come as a result of his trips to Beijing and Montreal in mid-late 05. From these he's gathered a solid selection of killer Asian tracks, much modern Franco-phone music... bP's fairly obsessed with very modern evolutions in sound... expect to hear an evolution of the tangent he started taking at the turn of the century. Hot Property (Costa Rica)
Originally from Costa Rica, South America, Hot Property began dabbling with sound when performing at the 'Penguin Chill' of Teriakyanarkysaki, a legendary hard techno club. Using a combination of pre-programmed musical pieces and live-mixed performance, he'd play elaborate and epic live electronic music sets to spun out alternative types... recovering from pound The set Hot Property will do at GLOBAL TRASH is
his self titled 'Matador' set... a 100% Latin Spanglish Reggaeton mix.
Reggaeton is the latest ghetto sound that is sweeping across the United
States. We wont give too much away, but it will be as he puts it "...more
than just a DJ mix..."
Uber Lingua mainstay Mashy P was originally
scheduled for this gig but moved his slot to a later date to make way for
the Future World Funk-ster.
