LINGO 4 : Friday March 25th
8pm until 2am : SIRENS : 6 Victoria St Hobart

In February, the highlight of Lingo was a pan-African percussion troupe that arrived at the gig unannounced under the leadership of popular Hobart-based musician Fabio Chivandha from Zimbabwe.  Fresh from having played at Afritas Restaurant, they kept the crowd dancing in a smooth transition from DJs to acoustic music and back.  Melbourne's DJ bP blended electronic loops with the infectious percussion, creating the 'post-world music' sound to the level that the Hobart Lingo audiences are always surprised by.

Building on the popularity of the African artists at the last Hobart event, on Good Friday Lingo is featuring Kenyan afrobeats king DJ Bongo vs Melbourne's multilingual mashup prince bP. Surprise guests are also expected and will not be announced pre-event.

Kenya-born DJ Bongo (aka Otieno Ochieng) is one of the foremost Australia-based  afrobeats DJs, and his sets mix reggae, dancehall, kwaito, soca, calypso, hip hop, r&b, soul, dub & funky Arabic beats guaranteed to shake a crowd.  DJ Bongo is a founding member of MelbourneÇs weekly contemporary afrobeats venue åSafari KlubÇ and the Melbourne Afrobeats Festival.  DJed in support of recent WOMADelaide headliners Alpha Blondy & Solar System, as well as the best in contemporary Afro-Aussie sound available like Moses O'Jah & Afro Moses, True Live, Musiki Manjaro, Soukous ba Congo, Chantdown Sound & more!

bP (Brendan Palmer) has a background in music production, artist collectives, record label management  and broadcasting. Currently, one of his focuses as a DJ is in modern music that uses a diversity of languages, a leftover of his time working with SBS. As different languages use different parts of the brain, and as languages not understood by a listener become a non-contextual sonic element of any given piece of music, Brendan is inspired to discover as much 'post-world music' he possibly can.

Local DJ sakamoiz has just returned home from playing at bP's weekly Melbourne uber_lingua club, the inofficial WOMADelaide Club 'Zhivago' and Sydney's premier Latin beats event 'Chimichanga'.

Also on the line-up is Gusto, local producer and co-host (with sakamoiz) of Edge Radio show Dialect-ic (Saturdays 8-10pm).  Another Edge Radio host, Nitriya (of Indian Rhythms, Saturdays 7-8pm), is playing her popular Bollywood-inspired tunes that can start with cheesy pop and end in thumping drum n bass.
